|
|

What should I do with
my old Sky Set Top Boxes? |
|
| |
Old Sky Set Top Boxes should
not be disposed in general waste. Instead they should be collected
separately and sent for specialist treatment and recycling. Sky fully
supports recycling of electrical and electronic equipment and offers
free take-back or postage of waste Sky electrical and electronic products.
Householders or businesses can send old or redundant Sky Set Top Boxes
back to Sky for recycling, free of charge. Please place equipment in
appropriate packaging, include a note that equipment is for recycling
and address package to:

Why should I recycle my
old Sky Set Top Boxes? |
|
| |
Waste electrical and electronic
products contain hazardous substances which can have a negative impact
on the environment and human health if they are disposed of incorrectly.
Recycling electrical and electronic products also helps to recover
valuable resources which therefore reduces the need for raw materials.
Sky’s products are being marked with a crossed-out wheelie bin
symbol as we want to encourage the separate collection of our waste
electrical and electronic products.
By collecting waste electrical and electronic products separately,
Sky can ensure they are sent for specialist treatment and recycling.
Sky fully supports recycling of electrical and electronic equipment
and offers free take-back or postage of waste Sky electrical and electronic
products when new equipment is purchased. Products which are returned
to Sky will be treated and recycled to the necessary environmental
standards. |

Why can’t I put
my old Sky Set Top Boxes out with my normal household recycling? |
|
| |
Waste electrical and electronic
equipment can only be recycled by specialist companies. Materials collected
by your general household recycling service are sent to a sorting facility
where the materials are separated and sent on for recycling. These
facilities are not set up to deal with waste electrical and electronic
equipment. |

What is the WEEE Directive? |
|
| |
The Waste Electrical and Electronic
Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive) is EU legislation. It aims to
minimise the impact of waste electrical and electronic equipment on
the environment by increasing reuse and recycling and reducing the
amount going to landfill. One way of doing this is by making producers
of electrical and electronic equipment responsible for financing its
collection, treatment, and recovery, and for retailers of electrical
and electronic equipment to allow consumers to return their unwanted
equipment free of charge. |

|
|
| |
What does the crossed
out wheelie bin symbol on Sky Products mean? |
|
| |
The crossed out wheelie bin
symbol is used to mark products that should not be disposed with general
household waste, but collected separately for reuse or recycling. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
What happens to waste
Set Top Boxes sent back to Sky? |
|
| |
All Set Top Boxes that are
returned to Sky are treated and recycled to the necessary environmental
standards. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
What are Producer Recycling
Fund Contributions (PRFC)? |
|
| |
If you’re in the Republic
of Ireland you may have seen a PRFC cost included in advertising for
electrical equipment. That’s because retailers are legally obliged
to show the cost of collecting and treating waste electrical and electronic
equipment, in writing, to each purchaser. So even though Sky does not
pass this cost on to our customers - we pay it on your behalf - we
still need to include the cost on our advertising material.
UK legislation is different. We still pay for the collecting and treatment
of electrical and electronic equipment, but we don’t need to
include this in our advertising. |

Packaging Waste |
|
| |
Packaging helps to protect
our products before they get to you. We are working to ensure our packaging
has the least impact on the environment as possible. We are aiming
to reduce the amount of packaging, select sustainable packaging materials
and encourage the recycling of the packaging we supply to customers.
You can help by recycling any packaging materials you receive whenever
you can. Recycling stops material ending up in landfill and reduces
emissions, as recycled products take less energy to make than originals.
